Maple and Her Pups
Roscoe is my Boy, and He’s the real Dad
Maple and her Pups are doing well, it looks like after the second or third pup her milk came in. The first three were all born about an hour apart and then the next four were born in an hour! A bit later number 8 came out, and we witnessed that one.
I was overly nervous and worried, A Nervously Expectant Father of Puppies, as my prior article was entitled. It wasn’t totally unfounded however.
I’m more used to dealing with Livestock births, where they usually come about every 15 minutes, and often in succession. So, when Maple hadn’t had Her second one, and didn’t appear to have much, if any, milk. I was worried. Had that been a Goat Kid, I’d have been very worried.
I sort of put my mind at ease by doing some research though. Here’s what I found …
“Normally we say that a dog that is having puppies should not go more than a few hours without passing the next puppy. If she goes more than 4 hours between puppies, then she has a problem” ~ Pethelpful.com
Straining actively for about 30–60 minutes without a puppy may indicate this sort of problem. A veterinary may be needed to correct the position or perform a C-section. ~ How to Help Your Dog Give Birth
While my Dad raised dogs, mostly Cat and Coon Hounds and Brittany Spaniel Bird Dogs, I don’t believe I’ve ever been a Puppy Daddy before. A Brother yes, but not a Dad. Or Grand Dad, because really Roscoe is my Boy, and He’s the real Dad.
